Data Types and Sources for HIE

Defined by ONC's HIE Roadmap

Health Information Exchange (HIE) has many benefits (See other HITEQ HIE briefs).  Achieving these benefits requires moving one step beyond the technical requirements for the exchange of information. The information needs to be exchanged in a form that enables it to be used.  Information that is exchanged and used is “interoperable” HIE. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) is allocating considerable resources to foster interoperability. This Issue Brief focuses on the sources and types of data that are exchanged by HIEs.
