Assessing the Value of Health Information Exchange

Assessing the value of health information exchange (HIE) is important to health centers to support the case for using HIE and for increasing the use of HIE. HIE value can be financial value (cost savings, increased revenue) and clinical value (improved clinical processes and outcomes such as greater utilization of preventive care and fewer hospital readmissions). The value of HIE may not be the same across health centers, and some benefits may take longer to accrue than others. This document provides information to help health centers evaluate their return on the investment (ROI) in HIE — a measure of the efficiency of an investment.
