Supporting Patients in Substance Use Disorder Treatment And Recovery through Social Services and Telehealth Peer Coaching in Rural South Dakota

Telehealth is especially important in rural areas for engaging and sustaining patients in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery support services. In particular, accessing services that address social determinants of health and engaging in peer coaching via telehealth can be invaluable to patients’ success in SUD treatment and recovery.  

Learning Objectives:

  •  Describe the START-SD (Stigma, Treatment, Avoidance, and Recovery in Time) Program and challenges to accessing substance use disorder (SUD) services in rural South Dakota
  • Discuss the need for support services related to the social determinants of health to engage and sustain patients in SUD treatment and recovery services 
  • Gain awareness of the Face It TOGETHER peer coaching model for individuals experiencing SUD and their families/caregivers
  • Understand the impact of peer coaching in rural areas and overcoming barriers through telehealth opportunities
