Telehealth & COVID-19: Implications for HIV Care & Treatment

Recent expansions to federal telehealth coverage, policy and regulations are changing the landscape of virtual HIV care delivery. This webinar showcased two telehealth programs for HIV care. The presenters discussed the impact of recent policy changes and strategies for health organizations to quickly implement virtual care in the era of COVID-19.

- Medical Advocacy and Outreach in Alabama has a telemedicine program that uses carts and peripherals such as bluetooth stethoscopes and audioscopes. Use “Suitcase units” to transport telehealth materials including peripherals. Also, provide telehealth consult for mail order medication through the pharmacy.
- UF Health in Florida has a telehealth program that uses Zoom. Has clearly defined clinical eligibility requirements for telehealth visits. Identify patients during weekly case conferences. Flag in EHR for providers to indicate if a patient with a diagnosis of HIV is appropriate for telemedicine and if not, the reason why. Since COVID-19, all patients are eligible. Initially, only saw established patients, but now new patients can have telehealth visits.
- Have a dedicated Telehealth Navigator who provides outreach and enrollment, case management, and TA.
- For labs through Ryan White, patients need to go in person, but review of results can be done through telehealth. Other insurances can order labs through telehealth appointments.
- Informed consent is completed during telehealth appointment through Epic EHR.
- Patient privacy educational documents are provided. For example, use a headset, use a private setting, do not use while driving or on public transportation.
- UF’s Zoom is linked to their EHR. Use privacy settings (e.g., lock meetings after patient joins, only allow provider to share, etc.).
